Born in Hopefield and educated at Weston Senior Secondary the nuggety Golden Lions and Springbok scrumhalf started his career for Boland in 2002. He represented South Africa at under-19 and under-21 level and moved to the Lions in 2003.
Januarie made his name for the Cats during the Super 14 of 2003 and 2004 before cracking the Springbok squad in 2005.
When Januarie burst onto the Test arena in 2005 he surprised many with his gutsy and determined performances for the Springboks. Indifferent form in 2006 coincided with the rise of Fourie du Preez and that has seen Januarie drop off the radar somewhat.
He has battled for some time to establish himself as a first choice for his Super 14 team and weight problems have also hampered his efforts. It has been a long time since he has shown the sort of form which made him a crowd-favourite back in 2005.
Januarie is a tenacious character who snipes in behind his forwards and gets involved in the physical stuff. His defence is outstanding as is his ability to get under the skin of his opposing scrumhalf.
He has not hit his top form for some time. The speed of his service is questionable at times and he has begun to make a number of basic errors at the back. His fiery temperament has also boiled over on occasions in the recent past and this could cost the Boks in a big game.
Januarie needs to sharpen up his game if he is to establish himself as the understudy to Fourie du Preez at the World Cup. On current form he is a distant third behind du Preez and Pienaar and this could hamper the Springbok cause when he is asked to do duty during the pool matches.
