Francois Steyn arrived at the Sharks straight out of school via their Academy in 2006, a year that saw him enjoy a meteoric rise in his career. He was invited to Murray Mexted’s Academy for a month in midyear and captained the SA Under 19 side at the IRB World Championship. From there it was a natural progression into the Sharks side, and then the End of Year Springbok Tour to Ireland and England, scoring a try on debut against Ireland. It was a year in which he received the Sharks Academy Player of the Year award and was also voted SA U19 Player of the Year.
