Brits to captain Emerging Boks

Stormers hooker Schalk Brits has been chosen by Emerging Springboks coach Peter de Villiers to captain the side, when they participate in the IRB Nations Cup next week in Romania.

“Schalk is one of the leaders in our team. He has a strong personality,” De Villiers told Die Burger.

“I coached him when he played for the SA Under-19’s. He is an outstanding guy. I believe the captaincy will help bring out the best in him.

“And, the responsibility will not have a negative influence on his game.”

De Villiers believes he may be able to bring out the best in Brits.

“Schalk is not being used enough. We want him to get his hands on the ball more often.

“We have many leaders in this team. Jonathan Mokuena (loose forward from the Cheetahs) and Jaco Pretorius (Lions centre) have captained the SA sevens side. They will assist Schalk when he needs help.”

In other team news, Lions flank Ernst Joubert has entered the squad following an ankle injury to Sharks number eight Ryan Kankowski.

“Ernst has a nice blend of aggression and speed. He also has the ability to get over the gain line,” said De Villiers.

“And, Mokuena offers us another good option at number eight.”

The team leaves for Romania on Friday.

The other contesting teams are Argentina ‘A’, Italy ‘A’, Namibia, Romania and Georgia.
