A punter based in London yesterday staked R2,15-million on the Boks to win the World Cup. This despite the fact that New Zealand are the odds-on favourites to win the tournament in France this year.
The bet on South Africa, placed with Ladbrokes at odds of 5-1, means that the gambler will win R10.75-million if the Springboks become World Cup champions. New Zealand are currently 4/9 favourites, with South Africa second, now down to 4/1. Hosts France are third on 9/1Â to win the World Cup.
Robin Hutchison, Ladbrokes spokesman, said: “We still think the Kiwis have got the tournament in the bag. But there isn’t a bookmaker in the world who wouldn’t have to adjust their market after taking a bet of this size.”
