It’s been a long time coming but today, at last, some good news emerged from the beleaguered Western Province union. Hapless coach Kobus van der Merwe has finally resigned!
Van der Merwe’s coaching and training methods were discussed today at a meeting with the Western Province Rugby Union – prompting him to hand in his resignation..
The WPRU released a statement confirming the good news:
“A meeting held with the President WPRFU, CEO WPRFU, Chairman WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd, MD WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd and the Vodacom WP Currie Cup coaches in Stellenbosch on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 addressed the issue of the continued involvement of the head coach and assistant coach of the Western Province senior team for the duration of the 2007 Absa Currie Cup.
“It was mutually agreed between all parties that in the interest of Western Province Rugby the coaches will step down.
“The Executive Committee WPRFU approved the outcome of the abovementioned meeting.
“Gary Gold and Nazeem Adams will assume the roles of acting head coach and acting assistant coach, respectively, with immediate effect for the remainder of the 2007 Absa Currie Cup.
There was further reason for embattled Western Province fans to celebrate as assistant coach Jerome Paarwater joined van der Merwe in resigning with immediate effect.
At last! The rebuilding can begin under Rassie.
Bye Bye Fester!
