Springbok player ratings v All Blacks

Best Boks:
Juan Smith, Francois Hougaard, Schalk Burger, Gurthro Steenkamp.

Worst Boks:
Bryan Habana, Morne Steyn, Pierre Spies, John Smit.

15: Gio Aplon – 6
Smashed Muliaina back in the tackle and made a few good runs.

14: JP Pietersen – 6
One try-saving tackle on Dan Carter in the 56th minute but looked to be carrying an injury which limited his effectiveness.

13: Juan de Jongh – 6
Great debut marked by excellent attack and defence.

12: Jean de Villiers – 6
Big game defensively and in organising the backline. Should’ve gone off when knocked out though.

11: Bryan Habana – 3
Terrible defensive showing – still looking for the intercept and giving away vital tries.

10: Morne Steyn – 5
Poor game by his high standards, penalty error cost the team dearly. Still missing Du Preez on his inside controlling the game.

09: Francois Hougaard – 8
Brilliant debut at scrumhalf for the Boks, playing with the energy and skill of a test veteran. Best Bok back on the day. Farewell McJanuarie…

08: Pierre Spies – 5
Continues his poor form and his aptitude at the highest level has to be questioned. No mongrel, poor in the tackle, and runs sideways instead of trying to bash across the advantage line.

07: Juan Smith – 9
Smith showed why his name should always be first on the teamsheet. Looked like he hadn’t been away. Made great runs, stole lineout ball and was an absolute monster on defence – just ask Richie McCaw. Best Bok on the field.

06: Schalk Burger – 7
The official man of the match scored the Bok’s only try, but missed a few crucial tackles. Energetic as always.

05: Victor Matfield – 6
A few good kickoff takes and marshalled the lineout well. Otherwise hung around in the backline too much.

04: Flip van der Merwe – 6
A satisfactory debut from the big Blue Bull.

03: Jannie du Plessis – 6
One of his better games – the Bok scrum held its own.

02: John Smit – 5
Looked out of puff early on, poor initial throwing-in at the lineout, and missed the tackle which lost the Boks the match. Mixed emotions on his 100th test.

01: Gurthro Steenkamp – 7
Scrummed and defended well – continues his excellent form.
