KEARSNEY EASTER RUGBY FESTIVAL
DAY ONE: 5 APRIL 2012

MATCH 6
GLENWOOD 25 – MONUMENT 18

The first half started off with both teams exchanging penalties with the score at 6-6, 20 minutes into the game. Glenwood’s number 20 Nkululeko Mcuma broke through the Monument backline to score a great individual try under the poles.

At the start of the second half, Glenwood’s Corne Vermaak (no 21) scoring again, to take the tally to 20-6.

Just before half way into the second half, Monument started their comeback with a try from Jordaan Uys, bringing the scores back to 20-13, after a conversion from Jaco van der Walt.

Straight after that Monument built up good pressure and scored a great try in the left corner by winger Sheldon Bester. The conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 20-18.

Glenwood didn’t lie back, but applied pressure in Monument’s 22, with Morne Visser putting in a skilful grubber behind Monument’s defence. He set up a brilliant try for Sphamandla Ngcobo in the left corner. The conversion was unsuccessful and the final score was 25-18.

QUEEN’S COLLEGE 20 – PAUL ROOS 43

A tight match at first, but Queen’s College made too many mistakes and Paul Roos’ strong back line took advantage of these errors. The team from Queenstown found Paul Roos’ defence resolute until late in the game.

Although Paul Roos was always in control of the match, Queen’s kept fighting, scoring the last try of the match in the dying minutes.

Queen’s would be disappointed with their performance.

This was a game of two halves, with Dale taking an early lead in the first half, taking the score at half-time to 10-0.

Westville came back strongly in the second half, bringing the scores back to 11-10. They elected to kick for poles a few times, but were unlucky, missing two penalties.

Dale held out for a tight win, without having scored in the second half.

MATCH 3
GREY COLLEGE 29 – PAARL GYMNASIUM 45

In one of the early upsets of the 2012 rugby season, Paarl Gymnasium playing a high intensity game of rugby and converting all points that were available, beat Grey College to end their record of over 950 days unbeaten.

Mention must be made of captain Handre Pollard scoring 25 points in the No 10 jersey, including the opening try, four conversions, three penalties and one drop goal.

Grey College remained calm as ever and closed the gap to 29-31 mid-way through the second half, but gave in to the onslaught by Paarl Gym, as they scored two unanswered tries to finish the game.

Grey number 9 Arrie Vosloo slotted a penalty and three conversions.

In a tightly contested match the scores were 12 all at half-time.

Affies backed themselves to go for the win by taking a quick tap instead of going for poles and scored a late converted try.

Affies captain J Pierre Schoeman scored three tries.

MATCH 1
KEARSNEY COLLEGE 10 – SELBORNE COLLEGE 5

The opening match of the festival was a game of missed passes and kickers not taking advantage of points available, with hosts Kearsney beating Selborne College 10-5.

It was a scrappy match, with a bit of dew on the field, in which both teams were strong at the break down.

Kearsney College scored the opening try of the festival, taking advantage of a poor backline pass to score under the poles.

Selborne used a chip behind the defence lines to their advantage, to come back and score their own try.

KEARSNEY EASTER RUGBY FESTIVAL – EGG-CITING EASTER RUGBY

A highly successful fifth Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival wrapped up yesterday (Monday) in swirling, misty conditions with the announcement of three players who were each offered a contract with the Sharks Academy and tuition bursary with Varsity College.

Glenwood captain Siyabonga Tom, Westville Boys’ High’s prop forward Nqoba Mxoliand Paarl Gymnasium winger Wion Robertse were each awarded the coveted contracts and bursaries; whilst Handre Pollard, Paarl Gym’s captain and flyhalf, and Affies lock RG Snyman were voted the festival’s best backline and forward players respectively.

Despite the country’s cold front that reached Botha’s Hill to ensure some final day games were played in rain, mist and poor visibility, the 12 participating schools continued to produce their high standard of play for supporting crowds.

Affies (Afrikaans Boys High School) from Pretoria was the only school to remain unbeaten at the festival – having scored wins over EG Jansen, Paarl Gym and Kearsney.

Hosts Kearsney College, Glenwood, Grey College, Paarl Gym and Paul Roos each won two of their three fixtures.

The upset of the festival was Grey College’s loss to Paarl Gym on the first day, after an incredible 950 day unbeaten record. Grey from Bloemfontein went on to beat Westville and Monument.

Kearsney beat Selborne College and Queen’s College, but lost to Affies on the last day. Glenwood beat Monument and Queen’s College, but drew with Dale College. Coming off their win over Grey, Paarl Gym then lost to Affies, before beatingSelborne College on the final day.Paul Roos beat Queen’s College and Monument, but then drew with Dale in their last game.

Selectors from the Sharks Academy who watched all three play days were impressed with the high standard of rugby displayed in front of the weekend’s estimated 13 500 spectators.

The final day clash between Paarl Gymnasium and Selborne College was a high scoring game, with Paarl scoring nine tries, to take the final score to 57-16. Captain and fly-half Handre Pollard ended the festival with 52 points, having been named man of the match for two games – against Grey College and Selborne. He was voted best backline player at the festival.

The game between Kearsney and Affieswas always going to be dominated by forward play with many handling errors due to the wet ball. Kearsney was slow on defence and took too long to get into position for most of the match, as Affies out muscled them in the rucks and mauls.Unbeaten at the festival, Affies showed true Blue Bull style of rugby with strong mauling from line-outs to win 22-10.

In their only win at the festival, Westville beat EG Jansen 27-19 after trailing 5-12 at half time. Man of the match, Westville’s Nquoba Mxoli who scored his team’s first try of the last game, was selected for a Sharks Academy/Varsity College bursary.

Glenwood proved too strong for Queen’s College, a team which had lost a number of players to injury during the previous two festival days. Glenwood’s pressure on their opponents and their strong defence, resulted in a 32-12 win. Queen’s points all came from penalties off the boot of captain Joshua Stander.

The opening game on the final day, between Dale College and Paul Roos, was an exciting and entertaining game of rugby, which ended in a 27-27 draw that could have gone either way. Dale’s Luke Massaire was man of the match for his three tries and a penalty.

The final match of the festival was a low-scoring game played in miserable conditions. Grey College beat Monument 8-0 in a physical first half which saw no points being scored. Grey was awarded a penalty early in the second half, which was converted by Arrie Vosloo.Monument applied pressure to no avail and, after much hard work, Grey was awarded for their hard efforts with captain Pieter Jordaan going over in the left corner for the only try of the match.

WORLD CUP REF FOR KEARSNEY RUGBY FESTIVAL

There is currently great excitement in schoolboy rugby circles as top schools around the country prepare their teams for this weekend’s Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival at Botha’s Hill in KwaZulu-Natal.

Respected Rugby World Cup referee Craig Joubert, who will referee at the festival, said he was astounded at the passion and standard of schoolboy rugby in SA, and it was “a privilege” to be part of it.

The festival has some of the best SA schools competing, he said, and for him it is always “a great thrill” to referee schoolboy games, as he had grown up recognising the importance of schools rugby.

The festival kicks off on Thursday (5th April) with hosts Kearsney playing Selborne College from East London. Later in the day Westville face Dale College from King William’s Town and Glenwood play Monument from Krugersdorp.

Saturday’s first game is the anticipated clash between Monument and Paul Roos from Stellenbosch. After lunch Affies plays Paarl Gymnasium, Selborne plays EG Jansen from Boksburg and Kearsney face Queen’s College.

On Easter Monday exciting play is expected from the clashes between Selborne and Paarl Gym, Kearsney and Affies as well as Grey College and Monument.

There will be six matches daily, with a prep schools game during each lunch break.

An incentive for three players is the opportunity to win a contract with the Sharks Academy and tuition bursary with Varsity College, which will be awarded at the end of the festival on Easter Monday (9 April).
