URC ’25: Lions 22 – 35 Bulls

On a sunny afternoon at Emirates Airline Park, the Bulls showcased their strength and precision to overpower the Lions 35-22 in a thrilling United Rugby Championship encounter. The victory reaffirmed the Bulls’ status as serious title contenders while exposing areas the Lions will need to address as the season progresses.

The Bulls stormed out of the gates with relentless pace and power, putting early pressure on the Lions’ defense. Their clinical execution saw them cross the try line twice within the opening 20 minutes, thanks to dynamic runs from winger Canan Moodie and prop Gerhard Steenekamp.

Fly-half Johan Goosen was in impeccable form, slotting both conversions and adding a penalty to extend the Bulls’ lead to 17-3 by the half-hour mark. The Lions struggled to gain a foothold but managed to claw back before halftime with a well-constructed maul try by hooker PJ Botha.

The scoreboard read 17-10 in favour of the Bulls as the teams headed to the tunnel.

The Lions returned with renewed intent, led by inspirational captain Marius Louw. Their forward pack gained dominance in the scrums, creating space for fullback Quan Horn to dart over for a spectacular try. Gianni Lombard’s accurate boot brought the Lions within striking distance at 20-17.

However, the Bulls refused to relinquish control. A decisive intercept try by David Kriel shifted the momentum firmly back to the visitors. Another converted score from Elrigh Louw sealed the Bulls’ commanding lead, taking the game beyond the Lions’ reach.

Despite a late consolation try from Lions substitute Emmanuel Tshituka, the Bulls maintained their composure and wrapped up a well-earned victory.
