Hoskins supports White on Zulu haka

SARU president Oregan Hoskins has come out in support of Jake White’s idea of the Springboks performing a Zulu war dance before Test matches.

“I haven’t spoken to him, but I like Jake’s idea very much and would support it. I think it would be fantastic for rugby in this country,” said Hoskins.

“First it would help the psychological battle in getting the guys worked up. The All Blacks have mastered that in the past century, to their advantage.

“But, more importantly, it would help to create a larger support base locally, in terms of exploiting the cultural strength we have in our society.

“We have so many cultures that include some kind of war dance. Being born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal, I immediately think of the Zulus, but there are others.

“We’ve got 50 days to the World Cup, so that’s not impossible.

“At the 100-year celebration of Springbok rugby recently at Paul Roos, we had Minister Lekota speaking, and he performed a war dance on the stage. It was fantastic! It’s probably something we could adopt – he’s basically given us one already.

“I think we should ask him to give it to us before he patents it!”
