Currie Cup Roundup – Week 6

In Week 6 Currie Cup action the Golden Lions thumped the Falcons in Brakpan, Griquas edged out Boland in Kimberley, the Cheetahs destroyed Western Province in Bloemfontein and the Sharks beat the Blue Bulls in Durban.

Valke 05 v 62 Golden Lions

The Lions scored nine tries as they romped to victory over a hopelessly outclassed Valke outfit in Brakpan on Friday. Returning Bok eighthman Jacques Cronje played a blinder, crossing for two of his team’s tries. The Lions look to be back in playoff contention after a lackluster start to the Currie Cup season.

Griquas look set for a playoff berth in this year’s Currie Cup after an entertaining victory over a game Boland Cavaliers side in Kimberley. Griquas number eight Heinrich Stride weighed in with two tries, while there was some consolation for Boland as they managed to score a bonus point try.

Despite a good showing by Western Province in the first half, the Cheetahs were just too strong after the break and romped to a 32 point victory. Willem de Waal was on song with the boot, slotting 20 of his side’s points, while Philip Burger was again impressive but highly irritating for the Cheetahs. Western Province have now lost four of their five games, while the Cheetahs remain undefeated and top the Currie Cup log.

The Sharks won their fourth match in five in a game which many in Natal had touted as a revenge fixture for the Super14 Final. The result puts them in second place on the Currie Cup log. Bismarck du Plessis was the stand-out player for the Sharks, scoring two tries and popping up in support all over the park.
