Friday’s Villager Schools Sevens Tournament was postponed at the quarter-final stage after horrific weather in Cape Town resulted in the conditions becoming too unsafe to play.
The quarter-finals will now take place on Saturday 8th September at Villagers Rugby Club from 10:00am as a curtain raiser to the Super League 1 match between Villager and Tygerberg.
The eight schools who will contest the quarter-finals are:
Bishops
Rondebosch
SACS
Wynberg
Tableview
Jan Van Riebeeck
Temperance
Fish Hoek
It was the first time in 39 years that the tournament was called off.
The rain started on Friday morning and got progressively worse through the course of the day. It rained harder, temperatures dropped and the wind reached near gale force conditions. The Sportsmans Warehouse gazebos were blown over, flags and pop up banners were uprooted and the field became a swimming pool!
Fond memories of my days at school in the Cape – most of our games took place in these sorts of conditions 🙂
Despite the weather conditions, that Brookside ground looks like an awesome venue – very ‘old school’.
Bloemshark:
The “old school” is all new development on the Brookside land that the WPRFU sold to stay solvent.
Brookside lost a field for the original development and then lost another because the architects measured wrongly and the field ended up being too close to the new buildings.
So they then had to demolish the clubhouse, reorient the field and rebuild the clubhouse.
Another day in the life of the WPRFU financial engineering…
And that’s good reason to believe that the decision as to whether WP stays at Newlands or moves to Green Point will be made with only one consideration in mind – whether they can raise enough temporary cash to bail themselves out.
In 20 years time, WP will have no more assets.
Shooo..thanks for the info LBS. Sounds like it was quite a mission getting that ‘old school’ look. Looks like they forgot to put in a good drainage system too.
