Bok player ratings v Samoa

Here are the Ou Grote Bok player ratings for the World Cup game against Samoa – won 59-07 by the Springboks.

15. Percy Montgomery – 7

Official Man of the Match. Started slowly but his experience shone through from the second quarter. Accurate goal-kicking, excellent positional play and some incisive runs into the backline. Rewarded with two tries.

14. JP Pietersen – 6

An erratic first half with some handling mistakes, but picked it up in the second half when his backline created more space for him to showcase his deceptive pace.

13. Jaque Fourie – 6

A fairly quiet game from Mossie, but took his try well with a good angled run. Suffered from a lack of good ball from de Villiers. Set up Habana’s first try with a good pass.

12. Jean de Villiers – 5

Replaced early in the second half with a bicep tear which spells the end of his World Cup. Looked rusty with some poor handling, passing and a defensive lapse which allowed Samoa’s Gavin Williams to break clean through the defensive line. The Bok backs looked more impressive after he was replaced by Francois Steyn.

11. Bryan Habana – 8

Habana was at his dangerous best and looks to be peaking at the right time after an excellent showing against Scotland in the Boks’ warm-up game and a great game again against Samoa. Scored four tries – two coming from sheer individual brilliance – and should’ve had a fifth but for a dubious forward pass.

10. Butch James – 6

Solid if unspectacular game from James. After a slow start he clawed his way back into the game with some solid defence and some more creative play in the second half before being replaced by Andre Pretorius.

09. Fourie du Preez – 7

Du Preez was not at his brilliant best but still put in a good performance with his quick service and solid kicking game.

08. Danie Rossouw – 7

The Daniesaur put in some big hits on the Samoans and a couple of bullocking runs. He didn’t do anything spectacular but put in the hard graft to create a solid platform for his team-mates to play off.

07. Juan Smith – 7

A busy performance from Smith culminating in an excellent second half which showcased his ball-carrying and defensive capabilities.

06. Schalk Burger – 7

Schalk was his usual busy self – harassing and frustrating the Samoans at the breakdown and providing a creative link between the forwards and the backs. Good passing and the now customary big hits on his opponents.

05. Victor Matfield – 7

His usual brilliant game in the lineouts – securing his own ball and a lot of the Samoan’s as well. His combination with Bakkies was world-class with his partner’s hard graft in the loose freeing Matfield up for some good play around the park – notably his pass to Habana for the winger’s fourth try of the match.

04. Bakkies Botha – 7

The Bok Enforcer was at his belligerent best – announcing his presence to the Samoans with some ferocious rucking and tackling. Involved in a few off-the-ball incidents – but that’s how the Samoan’s play. Freed up Matfield to play a more creative role.

03. CJ van der Linde – 7

Great performance from CJ – his hitting of the rucks was brutal at times and he contributed to the total domination of the Samoans at scrum-time. Popped up around the park for some barnstorming charges.

02. John Smit – 7

Welcome back Barney! His added weight in the scrum contributed to the Bok domination of the Samoans in this area. Showed good captaincy in cajoling his team out of their first quarter slumber.

01. Os du Randt – 7

Just when we thought the Ox was finished, he puts in a performance like this. There were the strong runs, the annihilation of Census Johnson in the scrums and the confidence-boosting big hits of old. Looked energetic.
