England prematch programme:
This is how the England team will prepare for tonight’s final
Breakfast
This should be late. The players are encouraged to go to bed late, sleep late and thus their body clocks will be ready for an evening kick-off.
Mid-morning
Team huddle. Brian Ashton, the head coach, reinforces key points. They often go outside to discuss impact of the weather. Forwards walk through a few lineouts.
Early afternoon
Entire team encouraged to try to sleep. Barely anyone succeeds. “Where can you go?†is Jason Robinson’s problem. “There’s nowhere. At home you can go downstairs and not have to sign autographs on the way down.â€
Pre-match meal Four hours before kick-off. Some players are particular. Chicken, pasta, tomato sauce and vegetables for Martin Corry. Beans on toast for Mark Cueto.
Pre-departure
Another forwards meeting led by John Wells. Then Ashton’s last words.
7.25pm
ETA at Stade de France.
8.45pm
Last words of Phil Vickery. Then onto the pitch. Some players are particular here: Robinson likes to be out of the tunnel near the front, Corry and Cueto like to be last.
8.55pm
National anthems. Mike Catt always has to touch his ear when the camera pans across him. This is how he says hello to his parents.
9pm
Kick-off.
