“It was always going to be a tough fixture. We lost six of our forwards from the World Cup Final and there were a lot of class players in their team.

“But I think the one thing we must never forget is that rugby union has a history and we must never erode that. The way the Barbarians played for the jersey, it was like they were defending for their countries.

“When the Boks run out for their first game next year, that’s probably when it will hit home that I’m no longer a part of it. I’ve been really privileged to lead an amazing group of players in an amazing four years.

“The most important thing is to just enjoy it and reflect on what’s been an unbelievable year, just put my feet up and enjoy the achievements.”

“We only had four days’ preparation and the guys came in and put in a massive effort. That first half, especially, was outstanding, the boys played so well. In the second half, although it was raining and the weather got progressively worse, we still kept them out.

“With England we couldn’t beat them in the World Cup and we couldn’t beat them in the mid-year Tests, but today we got it right and won the game,” he said.
