Boks add to planning camp ahead of World Cup
South Africa have added four more players to their training camps planned ahead of the World Cup later this year.
Head coach Peter De Villiers has called upon the services of Racing Metro’s Frans Steyn, Lions fly-half Butch James, Ulster’s Ruan Pienaar and Cheetahs No.8 Ashley Johnson as he gears up for the Boks defence of their world crown in New Zealand.
With the planning camps aimed at preparing the squad both mentally and physically for the challenge ahead, those placing sports bets note how De Villiers has now added the four to talk through the logistical planning for their assault on the biggest prize in rugby.
Steyn and Pienaar will link up with the squad after finishing their commitments in Europe, and while the foursome will be outsiders to make the plane, De Villiers insists all four will have a fair crack of the whip in getting into the final group.
“The fact that a player may not have been included in this group does not mean they are out of the running for the international season by any means,” he said.
“The first session was designed to get an expanded group onto the same page and this reduced group with senior players, and one or two newcomers, is designed to go into more detail.” He added.
The 36-man squad have convened in Durban and will look to step up their preparations once the Super Rugby season is finished with.
South Africa are amongst the sports betting favourites for the World Cup later this year, and get their campaign underway against Wales on 11th September.
