News Snippet Ollie le Roux on the Rugby World Cup: “The World Cup is all about money, and at the end of the day, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s the worst thing that could have happened to rugby in the world because it is a one-off test and to be the best in a one-off test doesn’t mean anything. I prefer the old system of playing a five match test series and grinding it out to see who is the best in the world. The World Cup is a marketing exercise and designed to make money. It’s disgusting.” Comments:

  1. What Ollie says is largely true if you look at Englands current rating in the world and yet they are the current world champs. I think the tournament has value as a spectacle to promote the game but ultimately results in home & away series’ over a period of say two years, should determine who wears the crown.

  2. The IRB could solve the problem of meaningless tests in a world cup year by using the world rankings to determine pool positions and qualification (with the opportunity for a few wildcards from developing rugby nations). Using the rankings will ensure that all tests between world cups become meaningful and it prevents the situation in the current RWC where 3 top teams are contesting one pool.
